I noticed this a long time ago and just pushed it to the back of my mind, and I'm sure it has a simple answer, but...

Why do fighters pour water on the floor right before the fight and rub their feet in it?

To make sure they're clean so their opponent don't smell stinky feet? LOL

maybe to keep their grip on the mat? Not sure.

You're probably right Lisa. I just notice the craziest things sometimes.
Jamie Varner almost makes a ritual out of it. I was thinking, damn man, you're going to get carpet burn!

Think your right about the traction thing.

ive never really noticed anyone do that before. im not sure if it would give them traction, could be, of all things i could think of is just to prevent mat burns but even then thats not really a problem in the ring.

I don't think Urijah does it or we could ask him. But watch any of Jamie Varner's fights. He does it every time. If I ever get a chance to talk to Jamie, that will be the first question I ask him. lol I saw somebody else do it on last night's fight, that's what made me think of it again.

I have no clue who is right but I know out of respect for wrestlers that follow them in pro wrestling some wipe their feet to get stuff picked up in the arena off of there boots before getting in. I seen boxers do it to and assume its the same reason. In mma they don't wear boots or shoes but maybe the ones with a boxing background do that out of respect.

i think they let you wear wrestling shoes in mma. i was watching wanderlei silva fight, and his opponent had shoes

I said pro wrestling not amateur wrestling. That stuff goes all the way back to the early days of pro wrestling and probably boxing.

Most of the fighters wear shoes down to the cage, but when they don't they pick up dust and dirt on the walk down and they need to get rid of it before going into the cage. The people that spit water and ear shoes - there is no reason for it.

It is the same sort of thing as the NBA players do when they stand on the sticky-mat to clean off the bottom of their shoes before going into the game

So thats basically like I said about pro wrestlers swiping there feet on the mat outside the ropes to get rid of stuff they picked up on the arena floor?

Thanks for clearing that up. Varner must have some dirty feet, he looked like he was going to tear a hole in the mat. haha

so now when I meet him, instead of asking what the purpose of the water thing is, I'll just say...let me see your feet!
