Featured fights include Sacramento’s Scott Smith vs. Terry Martin, Babalu Sobral vs. Bobby Southworth in a battle for the Strikeforce Light Heavyweight Championship, Duane "Bang" Ludwig vs. Yves Edwards and Luke Stewart vs. Joe "Diesel" Riggs. Plus, Jose Palacios, Brian Schwartz, Luke Rockhold and Turlock’s Josh Neal! And don't miss the Bay Area debut of Kim "Sugar Free" Couture, the wife of the legendary Randy Couture."

There are fights in Atlantic City, my friends go pretty often...not sure if there are many big names or anything, but hey, mma fights are pretty great no matter what.

Scott Smith ahs been around...UFC, WEC, EliteXC
I just watched an old fight of his (from 2007) against Pete Sell (who trains at the same place some of my freinds do, Serra)...
anyway, Pete Sell nailed him in the gut, he almost went down...as Sell charges in with his hands down, Smith pops up and nails him in the face...not only did he knock Sell out, he broke his nose.
This kid is fun to watch...trains with Urijah (or at least did at some point).

Scott Smith and James Irvin now own a gym called Ulitmate Training Center !!

Yeah, there was a bit of a "falling out" between Urijah, James and Scott. We will leave it at that.

Irvin was along with Paulo addicted to oxycontin !! Did the parting of ways have anything to do with Irvin's addiction ?
I would rather own my own gym and get paid then to train at someone's anyway , no disrespect meant to UF, I mean from a business stand point anyways !!

Hey Droolie. Yeah, Atlantic City has always welcomed good fights. I'd like to see more events come to Buffalo.

No it didn't have anything to do with addiction - just different ideas about running a business. Then when Scott and James left they opened their own gym just a block away from where UF was about to open up their 2nd gym and used a very similar name - Ultimate Training. They also started running commercials saying "come train at the only gym with true UFC fighters" - playing on the fact that Urijah wasn't in the UFC.
Honestly, I think James and Scott are great guys - I just never think it is a good idea to get into business with friends - it never works out

Hey JB. What is the drug-testing policy for WEC, UFC fighters? Is it generally the same among all other MMA organizations?
Sac23722
11-19-2008, 09:44 AM
The drug testing is actually done by the Athletics Commission in the state where the event is taking place - not the UFC. The standards are generally the same for every state though. The only time you will see the UFC actually do the testing is when the fights are in Europe. In Europe they don't have an Athletic Commission to run the tests so the UFC does it themselves - although they don't legally have to do it - they want the rules to be consistent for all of their events.

Thanks Sac. Which means it's the WEC, UFC (as in Leben's recent case) who are soley responsible for determining their fighters fine and/or ban? I imagine the other MMA organizations would have similar rules in effect?

No actually, it is up to the Athletics Commission to set the length of the suspension and the amount of the fine. This is how I understand the rules:
Technically the fighters are only banned from fighting within the state they test positive but all of the other states have agreed that if you test positive in another state then then they will not let you fight in theirs either. (example: if you test positive in CA then NV will uphold the suspension and not let you fight in their state either).
As a result, you can't fight anywhere in the U.S., but technically you can still fight in another country (say if the UFC holds a card in Europe). However, the Athletics Commissions in the U.S. also have a rule that if you fight in another country while suspended in the U.S., you can never fight in the U.S. again.

Buffalo ain't gonna happen until New York City says OK...then the rest of New York State will follow suit (I'm out on Long Island).
Droolie: if you can keep me informed of any A.C. events, I'd appreciate it.
Some of my boys who train at Serra go to Connecticut to fight too.

No testing in Japan as well. Each state where MMA is sanctioned has their own rules and regs, but as SAC stated for the most part they are all the same !
The Athletic commission hands down the fines and suspensions !! The UFC/WEC just have to make sure the fighter abides by them.
Since the fights are usually far inbetween can't the fighters get away with some sort of drug use? Or are they tested regularly whether they fight or not?

They can use drugs if they want but there are plenty of substances that have been banned by athletic commissions across the US. Ananbolic agents stay in your system for months at a time so a fighter taking them will get caught. Even if they stop 5 months out, very small amounts may be left in their system and the AC's will find them. If you feel that you need that something extra to compete, go get into another activity like chess, checkers or monopoly.

I gotcha. I was just seeing if some smoked pot or did stuff like that occasionally.

I've known Scott for five years and never to have known him to partake in Mari-J.
I don't even know who Scott is. I'm just curious on what fighters really do on their time off, that was all.
I'm sure smoking pot is not real conducive to the training and all that I was just using that as an example.

We are talking about Scott Smith, former gladiator challenge and WEC champ. He was also a trainer at Faber's gym for a good while.
Hmmm... what they do when not training. Video games come to mind for some reason, watching fight vids on guys you want to fight or are going to have a match with. Spending time with family if you have one. They are normal guys just like everyone else, it's just that some let the fame go there head.
yeah they seem pretty normal just from things I've read, I was just wondering. I was talking with someone and we were having a conversation about fighters and what they do on time off and this person said "probably smoke pot" so it got me thinking about what they really do. Thanks for the info Tobias, very interesting. I've learned a ton from you already!

Nothing wrong with smoking a little weed. But I'm a nurse, so we're drug tested frequently because we have access to so many different drugs. So no pot smoking for me. It's not worth it. I know there's some nurses and doctors that do it anyway. They just find a way to alter the results somehow. I'm sure some fighters are the same way.
See that is what I was kinda thinking! Thanks Ama.

There are ways to getting around almost anything but getting caught is the worst. You end up on the front page sherdog.com, mmaweekly.com, and possibly yahoo sports now. You get fined the the SAC and suspended so you lose even more money not being able to take a match. Not worth it.

Scott is a good guy - I don't see him doing any drugs - he does a lot of crazy stuff but I don't think drugs are one of them. The guy is a complete crack-up. You can't help but laugh at the guy
You can see what i mean on this website
http://www.sports1140.com/pages/1939975.php
there are a bunch of interviews from him that are really funny and there is a video towards the bottom in the middle of this page where he hits the guy who is interviewing him in the nuts.... pretty funny stuff

The Diaz bros and Eddie Bravo, are out in the open with their Pot smokin habits............they dont give a FU**.
Nick was even suspended a couple of time for testing positive for THC !!

I have heard rumor that Chuck Liddell likes the nose candy !! Keep in mind that is just what I heard from some guys that have hung with Chuck a few times !!
wow! Pretty interesting. Mary jane is making her presence in the fighting world!!!
Chuck Lidell and coke? Now that's dumb and a great way to destroy your career and your life!

theres a good number of athletes in mma that are very in tune with their health, are into "alternative" healing methods, and into clean eating....chiropractic, acupuncture, homeopathy, colonics, yoga, meditation, organic ingredients, raw foods, etc etc - cannabis isn't looked upon as a drug by most people with those types of views ;)
Thank you Felix, that is what I was thinking!!!! :)

It is a drug, but I don't see why it is illegal. It's certainly no worse than nicotine, alcohol, or even caffeine. I mean, if I don't have my caffeine fix in the mornings, I'm a bitch the rest of the day. Pot's not like that. I've smoked my fair share of weed in my younger days, but I was never bitchy if I couldn't get it. But some people are a lot easier to be around if they are smoking weed instead of drinking, or even being themselves (like my ex). :D I have told him more than once to burn a joint and stop PMSing!

Scott just beat Terry Martin in 24secs at Strikeforce last night. So I told you he was funny, right? Well here is an example:
After his win last night they do an interview - he thanks his sponsers and all that and then says he was sorry his friend Tom Atencio (Tom owns is the head of Affliction) couldn't make it to the fight because he had to run up to Canada really quick to marry his long-time domestic partner Nate. He went on to congratulate Tom. All the fans started posting on Forums - "wow I didn't know Tom was gay" - and it turned into a huge story
Well of course Tom isn't gay, Scott was just messing around.
ha ha that is some funny stuff!!! What a way to get a huge rumor started! Funny!!!

That's too funny!
I have these two friends at work. Chrissy bought a cheap ring off ebay. Mandy loved the ring. So when her birthday rolled around, Chrissy bought Mandy a ring very similar to hers. I heard somebody telling Mandy how pretty her new ring was. So I said...oh, Chrissy bought her a ring that matches hers, they're engaged now. So the rumor started that Chrissy and Mandy were gay and were moving away to get married and that their jobs would be posted soon! LOL
