To those who are serving and have served I thank you.

Heroes

By Jared Jenkins

In war, there are lives risked and lives taken
Men and women giving their best to defend what they love
They defend their country
Their honor
Their people

Some call them soldiers
Others call them heroes

Our veterans have risked their lives for us
They have lived through hell and fought with honor
Many have killed
And regret doing so

For every life, there is a soul
For every soul, there is a life
For those who have died, we show great appreciation and remembrance
For those who live, along with them live the horrific memories of battle
Some, memories of defeat
Some, memories of victory

Our veterans were more than soldiers
They were, and still are heroes

Thank you for that awesome post. The first 29 years of my life is affiliated with the military. I would not trade any of the years for anything. I have the utmost respect for all who have served and who are serving now.

Shout out to my Dad who put in 23 years to serve his country! He's the best!

Felix, I wish you would have added, "do not read at work." It made me cry. I've done a lot of research on the holocaust and I've never come across this story. Thank you for posting it.

Great read, but sad. Our Vet's don't get the recognition and appreciation they deserve!!!!

Loves his quote at the end:

"The people that are in this room really are an endangered species," another man said. "When they're gone, they're gone. ... That is why they should be honored and put in history for generations to come, because there are not that many of them left."

Amen to that!!

This story has been told a few times and most of you have seen the movie and others may have read the book "Black Hawk Down". Michael Durant the pilot of the helo that was shot down also wrote a book and added a few details and I would like to share it with you. I wrote this a few years ago and have copied it for you folks here that don't know.

On Sunday, October 3rd, 1993 while in Mogadishu, Somalia while trying to capture a Somalian warlord a blackhawk helicopter was shot down known as "Super 64". Seeing this from above and knowing that no ground force could make it in time Delta Snipers MSG Gary Gordon and SFC Randy Shughart volunteered to go down and set up a perimeter around the crash site. They were denied 2 times to go in and asked again to go in. This time they were allowed.

They couldn't get dropped off at the actual site do to many huts so they were about 70 yards away when they got dropped off. They couldn't set the helo on the ground so they told them they would have to jump from 5 feet off the ground. Before jumping they looked at each other and the other sniper that had to stay after a crew chief was shot. He had to man the machine gun. They gave each other a thumbs up and smiled then jumped. They worked their way to the crash site and Michael Durant just woke up after being knocked out when they got there. He had a broken back and broken thigh bone. At that time Michael Durant thought the rescue force had arrived and was relieved. They picked him up and placed him with his back against a wall near the tail of the downed helo.

He noticed them talking and laying out a game plan of what to do then they disappeared to the other side of the helo. He hears AK-47 fire and then "double taps" in return from the snipers. At this time Gary Gordon is shot and says in a calm voice "I'm hit". A few seconds later Randy Shughart comes around the helo back to Michael Durant and ask him if there are any other weapons on board the helo and for a frequency on the radio. At that time Durant realized that he wouldn't ask for the frequency if they came in with anyone else and knew that those two were the only ones to come in and one of them was already shot and wounded or dead. Randy ran to the helo and got on the radio and said "We need help down here".He went to the other side of the helo and came back with Gary's weapon handed it to Durant and looked at him and nodded his head. Then disappeared for the final time. Durant heard all hell break loose then dead silence. He placed his weapon on his chest and crossed his arms and looked at the sky waiting to be killed but he was beaten and captured and was released a few weeks later. They had said from the airplane filming the battle that Gary and Randy had killed atleast 50 people trying to get to them before dying themselves.

For their actions that day both Randy and Gary were awared the "Medal of Honor". Randy Shughart is buried where my aunt lives in Clearfield, Pennsylvania. While at a dedication ceremony in his home town in Maine for Gary, Michael Durant was to say something about him. He went to the local library to look up a book on the Medal of Honor for his speech. While looking at it he noticed the last person to take out the book was Gary when he was in high school. Thats truly amazing to me.
