Info from wiki
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Georges_St._Pierre
Georges "Rush" St.-Pierre (born May 19, 1981), often referred to as GSP , is a French-Canadian mixed martial arts fighter. He is the current Ultimate Fighting Championship welterweight champion.
Born May 19, 1981 in Saint-Isidore, Quebec, Canada, St. Pierre had a difficult childhood, attending a school where others would steal his clothes and money. He started learning Kyokushin karate at age seven to defend himself against a school bully. He took up wrestling and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu after his karate teacher died, and has also trained in boxing. Before turning pro as a mixed martial artist, St.-Pierre worked as a bouncer at a Montreal night club called Fuzzy Brossard and as a garbageman for 6 months to pay for his school fees. St.-Pierre has trained with a number of groups in a wide variety of gyms throughout his fighting career. Prior to his fight with B.J. Penn at UFC 58, he trained at the Renzo Gracie Jiu-Jitsu Academy in New York City. St.-Pierre received his brown belt in BJJ from Renzo Gracie on July 21, 2006. after working up to his purple belt with Fabio Holanda at Brazilian Top Team Canada, who cornered many of his earlier fights. St.-Pierre is also a former member of the Canadian Top Team. He also spent time training in Quebec City, and has returned to training in Montreal with Brazilian Top Team Canada. He has also trained with The Ultimate Fighter 4's Patrick Côté and former UFC middleweight contender David Loiseau, and spent some time in the Montreal Wrestling Club. St.-Pierre also trains in boxing with Howard Grant and Otis Grant at the Grant Brothers Gym in Dollard-des-Ormeaux, Quebec. Here he gets the chance to spar with world champ Joachim Alcine and others.
Recently, St.-Pierre began training with Rashad Evans, Nathan Marquardt, Keith Jardine and many others at Greg Jackson's Submission Fighting Gaidojutsu school in New Mexico. Some of Jackson's students have also accompanied Georges to Montreal to train at BTT Canada and Tristar Gym including Keith Jardine and Nathan Marquardt. Currently, George trains in Muay Thai under Kru Phil Nurse at the Wat in New York City.
In September 2008, St. Pierre earned his black belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu under Bruno Fernandes

Thanks Bako, what a brilliant idea! It's great learning about people, not just his MMA background, but his personal info to, i.e., how he grew up and where. Also, he has the same birthday as my son. :D Look forward to the next fighter you choose!

I think someone could maybe explain a new fighting techinque each week????? I have no clue what a rear naked choke hold is for example. Just an idea, I know I could google it too but this makes it more fun :)

Rear Naked Choke

Ok Lisa, here you go. I've applied this move before, but I had to look it up because I could not figure out how to explain it.

To apply the technique, the back mount, also known as the rear mount, must be achieved. From that position of back control, which can be secured even more by hooking the insteps of the feet into the inside of the opponents thighs, the choke can be effectively applied.

The technique involves wrapping one arm around the opponents neck so that the inside of your elbow is placed against his throat. This will naturally place your bicep against one side of his neck and your forearm against the other side. From there you have two options for sinking in the choke and applying the pressure needed for the tap. You can place the hand of the arm you have wrapped around the neck on the bicep of the other arm and the hand of the other arm on the back of the opponents head. From there you hug your arms together and push out with your chest. The other option is to use what is called the Gable Grip. Where you take the hands of both your choking arm and your free arm and place them together with the palms facing. From that position you can squeeze the choking arm tight against the neck and get the tap out.

Thanks Ej. I think I just need to win the contest for the training session so I can learn them, I want to learn basics like that. Thanks for sharing. I try to get my husband to wrerstle me in the yard but he gets concerned someone will call the cops. I just get in the mood sometimes to kick some ass! I need to learn the guillotine???? too. I hear some moves mentioned all the time but have no clue what they are. I usually call that one the gree-o-tene and I ususally get laughed at.

LOL - Lisa, you need to start taking classes! Check out the local MMA gym and see what's available. Or just get started in BJJ. I think you'd really like it even if you have to do cardio.

I don't mind cardio if I am doing something besides just running. I've played soccer my entire life and that is a ton of cardio. Didn't mind that one bit. But just to run for the hell of it, I can't do that. I do need to look into classes. That would be awesome.

If you've done soccer your whole life then cardio will be no problem for you. Wish I would have done that instead of bowling my whole life. Not much cardio in that!

Seriously, if you don't want to do MMA, then check out a jiu jitsu studio and just learn grappling for right now. I tried jiu jitsu but it was too hard on my knee. But I watch the classes all the time since Cody takes it. Sometimes our instructor will go through ground escape maneuvers in our taekwondo classes which is cool. That's how I learned how to apply some of these techniques.

Stolen clothes gives new meaning to rear naked choke! :p

Great idea Bako! I look forward to reading these as you always seem to learn something you didn't know. ;)
