View Full Version : weighing strong points in a fighter
I was wondering which category you guys deem most important for a fighter's specialty.
Meaning, is it more advantageous to be a top notch STRIKER, WRESTLER or SUBMISSION ARTIST?
I know they all have their advantages...but which is best if you had to pick one?

well since my backing is in kickboxing I have always been a striker and like it best. I think if you are a solid striker you can then pick up enough of the other abilities to be able to round out your game. Plus if you are say Silva you just knock fools out and don't have to worry about the rest very often

I personally like a striker if iam going to spend that much money to watch a fight that's what I want to see.I know I don't know much about wrestling and maybe if I did I could appreciate more but I don't like it when they just roll around on the mat.

the striker's are exciting, the submission artists are scary b/c they can pull shit outta nowhere, the well rounded martial artist are the most interesting to watch, they keep ya on your toes, never knowing what to expect

I do like the strikers and submission artists. I want to watch fights that are fast-paced and technical. With my short attention span, they've gotta work it. ;)

You have to be well versed in all aspects of MMA. People have their strengths but don't just rely on that. So, for me, I wouldn't say any one specialty is an advantage. Because if you suck at the other things, well you're kind of fucked.
leave it to Kimberly to say it so short and sweet.
LMAO!
I guess I would want to be a submission expert. If you get knocked down you can strike from the floor/your back.
If you're standing you can turn a flying armbar into a victory.
I just like submissions.
:)
I guess they don't help you if you get rocked by a striker and end up knocked out with a broken jaw...
Good topic. We haven't had many of those around here lately.
I think Muay Thai would be a nasty thing to try and stay away from. A clinch is a clinch, and they call it that for a reason. I think when someone can throw a knee through a persons stomach, and sometimes even the head, it's devastating. One second you have a broken rib so you hunch over. Next, you find your opponents knee getting acquainted with your face.
Nice to meet you, knee.
Muay Thai is something I know nothing about.
Wasn't Tobias trained in Muay Thai?? he's been off for a while.
Nice guy.
I like your 'Nice to meet you, knee' comment Pittsburgh.
Had me laughing:D
I still say if you had to pick ONE...I would go the submission route.

I'd have to say strikers & submission artists. Love to see a great knock out.

I'm going with striker. But I also like the action a submission artist brings to the cage. The wrestlers also keep it interesting. Its a hard choice. lol
What's funny as I'm reading all these, is a lot of people pick submissions.
Now when I was at the fights in Ohio, many of them were ground based, and all I heard were "boooooooooo".
It was a tough one between Muay Thai and a good ground game for me, but I just love those knees.
I seriously hate when the crowd boos. I mean, you have to work it on the mat sometimes...or against the cage.
I can't imagine busting my ass through a round of constant work and having some idiot boo me.
Pfft.

I'd like to see some of those booers get in the ring and show us how it's done. See what too much beer does to some people.

I don't agree with the booing either but they have a right to boo. They spent their hard earned money for the fights so they have all the right to cheer or boo only problem is most take it too far

of course they have the right to, and what terra sd earlier most are probably drunk lol but if they would just be patient the ref would either stand them up or someone would get submitted. This is MMA if they want to see all these ppl get knocked out then go watch boxing. On Tv submissions are cool but it does sometimes get kind of boring, but like i sd they'll either be stood up or submitted. patience ppl! lol

I also love a good KO. I'd have to say striker. Submissions & wrestling is fun to watch to though. I just like seeing ppl get their asses kicked. :)

I know what you mean. I have an attention span that last about 3 minutes. A great fighter should have a good knowledge of all 3 areas but I do enjoy watching the strikers.
