WEC to Run April Pay Per View Featuring Urijah Faber vs Jose Aldo
by Kid Nate on Feb 3, 2010 5:00 PM EST in News 117 comments
The AP reports:
World Extreme Cagefighting will stage its first pay-per-view event April 24, scheduling a star-stacked card for its first attempt to persuade mixed martial arts fans to pay $44.99 for its fights.
Urijah Faber will meet featherweight champion Jose Aldo in the main event of WEC 48 from Sacramento, Calif., the lighter-weight MMA promotion’s leaders told The Associated Press before Wednesday’s announcement.
Former featherweight champion Mike Brown also will meet Manny Gamburyan at Arco Arena, and lightweight champion Ben Henderson will fight Donald Cerrone in a rematch of their acclaimed October bout.
Our own Michael Rome has done the best argument against this decision:
I've long been a skeptic of the WEC's prospects for PPV, but I understand why they need to start running PPV events. If they can't succeed on PPV they won't be financially viable in the long haul, and they can't count on Zuffa subsidizing them just to keep Versus occupied forever. However, May is a bad month for an obvious reason: there is way too much competition for the WEC to succeed in May.
Take a look at the tentative PPV schedule for May in the United States:
May 1: Floyd Mayweather Jr. vs. Shane Mosley
May 8: UFC 113--Lyoto Machida vs. Shogun Rua, Forrest Griffin vs. Antonio Rogerio Nogueira
May 15: (Presumably WEC)
May 23: WWE Judgment Day
May 29: UFC 114--Rampage Jackson vs. Rashad Evans
Three major events will already strain the wallets of fight fans in May. WEC should wait until June, where a single UFC card in Vancouver is all they'll really be competing with, and it doesn't look like that card will have anything big in the main event slot anyway.
For my part, I think the WEC has made the best possible matches for this event, given their roster. But I too am extremely skeptical about the WEC's ability to fly as a stand alone PPV draw, regardless of the timing

I'll buy it. I won't buy all WEC PPV either. If its one of our favorite fighters I will. I don't buy all UFC fights. I'll get it if my girlfriend, brothers or some friends want to come over and watch it.
Kimberly had some good advice on where to see the fights.
I probably won't get the PPV. All my friends are UFC fans. Lots of fights around the same time.
Who knows, when the time comes I'll go all Faber crazy and buy it.
:D

I'm hoping to be there. Already got my tix to the fight, just need airfare & hotel. We'll see. If for any reason I can't make it, I'll order it. Watching on the computer was ok for the last UFC because I really didn't care for the fight card, but if there are some bad ass fights, I'll pay PPV price to watch it. Also, if you don't want to pay for fights go to www.mma-core.com. They usually post the fights the same night or the day after. I watched the fights on Justin.tv last night and only paid $3 to watch UFC 110. Granted it was in Portuguese, but that's ok. I understand what's going on and, plus, I hate Joe Rogan and Mike Goldberg.

Since the airfare kicked my ass, I'll have to break down and order it. I've gotta see Faber get that belt back!!

I totally agree with you on Goldberg, Kimberly! He's such a douche!

Wouldn't miss it !! Wish I could get there in person - one of these damn days tho :) I'll be watching with a million of my butterfly friends !
I will pay. I recall reading somewhere that not all the fights will be PPV.

I'll pay for it. (Well unless my brother gets it). Regardless one of us will.
I'll be there, but if for some reason I get some kind of disease that permits me from traveling, I'll order it.

I will pay to see Faber get his belt back. Usually i will get some friends to come over and we all go in on it so I end up spending like 5 or 10 bucks (not bad)

I probably will but because Ben is going to have a war with Cowboy and I can't wait to see Ben pull off another awesome win
For some reason I feel Faber vs Aldo is going to be short one way or another

Wierd. I feel it will go well in to the 4th or 5th round. Faber being victorious of course.

we'll prob get it! it's much cheaper than the $2000 airfare.

you crack me up:p
I hope you aren't inflicted with crumbling foot or something before April.
LMAO!
As for me, I seem to be breaking under the mind crushing desire to see Faber in the cage again.
There's nothing like being at a fight...the energy is awesome. But being in my living room with a front row seat is pretty great too. I may cave and buy it.

Oh I'm sure we will be buying it. We have bought every UFC fight for the last year one way or another. We split it up. One time will be at our place, the next at our buddy Reid's house (but theyre about to have a baby) and the next time at another dude's hunting camp. Everyone just chips in to cover the cost. We bring Sprite and salsa every time. That's our requirement LOL. Its like we have our own little MMA club going down here. :D

I feel the same way. I think a short fight would actually be advantageous for Faber. The longer the fight, the more risky he becomes. But it does make it more interesting also.

good point:)
