I can't answer either of those questions but Urijah stops by occasionally and there are others here on the board that train. I'm just the only one awake this time of day.

I almost forgot...Welcome!

I really can't answer your sledge hammer question. I don't train that way myself so I really wouldn't be qualified to answer that. If you have a coach or fitness expert you could talk to I would probably suggest that. Probably the heaviest you could lift (several times over).

My suggestion would be as heavy of a sledge as you can comfortably swing for 45 min to an hour !! I am assuming you are planning on beating the crap out of a tire !! ??

Here is some info I found when i first started getting back in shape this site has a TON of badass workout ideas to incorporate into your routine !!!

This is the link to the site :http://www.marcusfisher.com/training/mma-workouts/a-powerful-mma-training-workout/

Click on all the tabs on the right side halfway down the page to get the low down !!

Below is a small bit of onfo from one of the links !!

Another great MMA conditioning exercise is sledge hammer training. This is used by a countless number of top fighters including Dan Hensderson, Tim Silvia, Fedor Emelianenko, Sean Sherk and Rick Franklin.

Here’s what Tim Silvia had to say about why he uses sledge hammer training:

“If I am on top of a guy on the ground, you know, I’m throwin hammer fists, I’m throwin big punches and stuff like that. It’s just building muscles that you can’t catch in a gym atmosphere where you’re doing bench presses and stuff like that. So I really try to incorporate things to simulate a fight and I really truly believe that this is the way to go.”

Tim hit the proverbial nail on the head with that statement. He explained the bottom line of why training with the sledge hammer is such an effective conditioning tool.

To start using sledge hammer training yourself, all you need is a sledge hammer from your local hard store and a used tire to pound on. You don’t have to get the heaviest sledge hammer available, just get whatever size you feel comfortable with. Obviously, the bigger you are, the heavier the hammer you should use.

Both the sledge hammer and the used tire will come fairly cheap. If you have the extra money to spend, you can get a few sledge hammers in different sizes to mix up your conditioning.

Hope this helps !!!

That's a really cool article JB. I skimmed through it and saw some stuff I really liked. I'm going to read the entire thing when I get back from practice.

Im about 140 before cutting and when i first started doing sledge hammer i used a 4 pound head, that was pretty hard to keep up for about 10 minutes, then i jumped to a ten pound sledge when the four started getting easy.

minus the sledge hammer we just got a big tire to do box jumps at home instead of actually building/or buying the boxes, all we need is the kettle bells and our little crossfit home gym will be complete~

Try carrying around a 30 pound kid all day. You'll be ripped like Urijah in 2 weeks flat.
Though you may need to bang your head against the wall a few times in frustration...no worries.
Your nick name in the cage can be Big Papa

isn't it strange how kids insist on being carried around like they can't walk. Mine is a little guy though. He's 6 years old, 42 pounds. He's a runt

Kim

He'll probably end up 6'4
Then he can carry you around:)
