View Full Version : Exercises for injured knee

I don't know if this is the correct place to post this thread (if not, let me know). I have had two knee surgeries (ACL and MCL, miniscus, & scar tissue). Unfortunately I still have scar tissue in my knee which causes pain on a daily basis. I've been training in tae kwon do for the past 3.5 years and have no intentions of quitting. Besides ice and ibuprofen (not big on taking medication), what other options do I have to reduce the pain and break up the scar tissue? Any exercises you know of?

My dad is a police officer and he was chasing a guy through a neighborhood one night. The guy he was chasing, being about twenty years younger, was hopping fences and all the like and one bad fence ended up splitting a huge scar into my dad's knees.
I'm not sure why you had surgery on your knees but I'm sure a surgery is a surgery, regardless of reason. I train Muay Thai and ground work with my dad and one thing he always mentions is that his knee, although back to normal after probably 5 years, he still can't kick as high as he used to with it or run as fast (or even stretch it as far). So I don't know if that'll be different for you but he can still use it and is very powerful with it, it's just not the way it used to be. I really doubt it'll ever hurt your tae kwon do training because it really doesn't affect his personal training either.
I don't know if you go to physical therapy or not but that's what my dad did. I'll ask him what kind of stretches and exercises he did tomorrow when he get's back from work though. I'll be more than happy to message you or something like that because from what I can tell, it worked for him very well.
Ps: There's nothing to REALLY take the pain away. My dad's knee hurt him long after the surgery, but I'll still ask him if there's any ways to help the pain. (He's not big on medication either. Green Tea is his cure for everything lol)

Thanks for the reply. I had surgery to reconstruct the ACL (complete tear). The other surgeries were to repair tears in the MCL and meniscus and take out a bunch of scar tissue in the knee. Unfortunately, the scar tissue grew back and surgery is not an option again.
When it comes to training, certain stretches hurt, as well as pivoting for kicks, jump spin kicks, slide kicks, you get the idea. I've done all the PT I can handle and still do some of the exercises at home. Guess I was hoping to hear from anyone who trains in some form of martial arts to tell me they knew of something different. Figured it doesn't hurt to ask. :)

No problem Ej. It sounds like you're going through everything my dad did with just as much dedication. My dad can still kick as hard as he used to with his leg, it's just not as high and sometimes it gets sore. But other than that he says it's really not a huge distraction any more. Just stretch it I suppose and keep doing what you do. It can only make you stronger right? :D
It's just good to hear you didn't let it take the best of you and I'm looking forward to hearing about your recovery!

It's great that you train with your dad. My son and I train together also. As for my knee, I have a motto: pain is not an option. It's what's kept me going through both surgeries. You have to suck it up and move on. But should anyone else come across this post who has some new, innovative exercise to try out, I'm open to any suggestions.
As I've said, I'm nowhere near being a pro fighter of any kind, but I love all aspects of martial arts and want to continue doing this for as long as I can. I'm even interested in getting new ideas for warm ups in class (i.e., stretches, ab work, leg exercises, cardio). Not only am I a student, but I am training to become a certified taekwondo instructor.
