As will I, i love to watch how much they evolve, not only in their mma exploits, but as young men on a daily basis !! Being a Dad is the BEST thing God has given me !!

I need to get my son started in some sort of self defense or martial art class. He just started school this year (he's 5). He is about the smallest boy there and has about the most attitude (he won't back down from anything). He's tough as nails for his size, but I can see him having to prove himself in the near future because of him being little.

What is a good age and style to start lil guys out with? My son is 4( but mature for 4) and I'd like to start out somewhere while he is young?

I'm sure everyone is going to have an opinion about this, but for kids your son's age taekwondo is a really good program to get him started. Most schools should have programs for that age group. I am interested to see what others recommend. Ultimately, do your homework and make sure whatever program you put him works for the both of you in terms of teaching and style. Good luck!

In my opinion (please dont take this the wrong way) 4 is too young. In my experience it is too hard to keep a group of 4 year olds attention on one thing for more then 5 mins at a time. I started my youngest off with Jitz at 8 and my oldest started when he was 12. My oldest has started boxing and some muy thai as well. Judo, Jitz, are all good base disciplines to transition into mma. If that is the goal. Any form of martial arts is great for young students to learn discipline, technique, form, and self-respect !!
But what do I know, I dont have my own website nor have I ever been a champion of any sort in the ring or cage !! Your son could be extremely gifted and be able to focus and comprehend at a ever young age !!

I have to agree JB, sometimes I feel 4 is too young also (but some kids have the mentality for it and some don't). We have a tiger cub program for 3 1/2 to 5 year olds but its two days a week and 30 minute classes. By no means are they learning punching and kicking, but more on focus, some discipline, respect, stranger danger, and playground bullies. For our jiu jitsu program, we don't start kids until they are 6.
Those are some lucky kids, a couple years from now they will look back and know they trained with a legend...
