What is the general MALE opinion???
What do you guys (and YOU URijah) think about women that train in any form of MMA?
Are ladies taken seriously?...or kind of joked about??
Ever since my introduction to MMA...I have wanted to give it a try...any style...but I am to scared to take that first step into a gym...
The strange thing is that I am not uncomfortable around men, I train in the weight room, I was raised as a tomboy....I was the only girl out dirt biking with the boys...or the girl who would practice with the mens rugby team for fun....I can hang with the guys...I work out in the bush with the guys...
WHY am I so fricken chicken to go check out MMA??? Espescially when I don't usually have this problem...
Maybe it's my small town and not a lot of options...or maybe because I don't have any friends that I know into any sort of MMA....I am just very intimidated I guess......? Should I be? eeek.:(

I am not in MMA myself, so I can only say that the sport is intimidating and should not be taking lightly. I think there is still a stereo type about women in the sport. It is wrong, but expected. It is still a new sport and over time, I think it will change. There are sport fans that still do not take the guys fighting in the sport seriuosly, which really bugs me. It is one of the growing pains of a growing major sport. Yes I said it MAJOR SPORT. So I think when you feel that you are ready, that you should do it. I am going to start up soon, but I am not going into to fight. I think that it is a great all around sport and a great way to stay in shape. When I am ready, I will spar, but I think that is as far as I will go. That could be a sissy way, but I know how far I want to take it. So when you know what your end game is, go for it. You have my support.

"I think there is still a stereo type about women in the sport."
And what is the steryotype...?
Is it that they are the little whorey girls there to lay fighters...
Is it that they are butches....
Is it that they are there for the image of a tough chick???
What am I worried about...
:p

I think that those are some, but not what I was thinking. I think that some guys do not like seeing a woman get whooped up. Also, some people still think women are too weak. I am not one of those people. Whorey? NO. Most of the women that fight now could match up with some of the men. Now ring girls are another story. Butch? Maybe some, but most of the women that they promote now are from that. Tough Chicks? There cool in my book.

I am all for it.
you know what, there is absolutely nothing wrong with a girl that wants to learn to fight.
I mean deep down a guy probably doesnt find it super attractive to have a girl that could totally rock him in a boxing match, but it is a great sport shared between both sexes. I say go for it, and of all the females at my gym, none of them are "butch". If you want to try it dont worry about what others think.
and as far as stereotypes, ive never really heard one about girls fighting.
plus with joining the sport you meet a lot of great friends, who wont judge you by that anyway. You become like a small family at your gym

Why do you care about what other people think.. Have you ever been in a fight before street or otherwise the rush you get from the competion there is nothing quit like it. If you are afraid of MMA try some Muay Thai or kick boxing then onse you become more comfortable try some BJJ or wrestling. Start of slow you do not always have to jump straight into the deep in wade in to the MMA pool. Remember tell the world to kiss your a@# and then kick its!!!
I agree with the post above mine from Fozzy!!!! I loved that little quote at the end. I am a chick so you probably don't want my opinion on this, nor do I really have anything to say that's worth anything, but if it something you're interested in go for it, life's too short not to do the things you want. Go for it. I think it would be badass to be a chick fighter.
I say go for it! I think it's cool when a girl knows how to be "a girl" and still kick butt. I love the rush of fighting... doesn't mean I don't love my stilettos. There is a lot of badass chicks coming into the MMA world.

No no, I appreciate everyones opinions, women too!!
I was just looking for the general opinion from a real guys perspective that trains seriously....what do they think of the ladies there...are they a joke...are they taken seriously??? I have never been in a gym to see for myself. And I don't want the Politically correct answer....I want the real deal.
I personally am not worried about what people think of me...haven't ever had that problem
But for some reason I am intimidated by the "fight club" and not sure where I should start...or if I really do have any reason to feel this intimidation...knowing me I will give something a try this winter...maybe boxing?
oh i see a bit more what your thinking about.
the girls in my gym train every bit as hard as the next person. We sparr the same level for everyone (unless they prefer lower level)
We take them serious, all of them can fight really well, and if you go and watch some of the female competitors, there division is no joke either

All I can say is you never know until you try. I've done a lot of things because I didn't want to look back and say "what if". Don't let anything stand in your way. If you don't like it, there's no shame in it. Fighting isn't for every one. I actually didn't even know if it was going to be for me until I really started doing it. Just find a good gym, work hard, and be the best you can. Boxing would definitely be a good start. I'm doing Muay Thai Boxing right now and I think its a really great start. It'll pretty much show you straight up if getting hit is your thing or not.
Here's the plus side: The boxing gyms around here, and I'm sure more around, won't make you advance into the 'getting hit' levels. You can just stay at the 'stay in shape' levels, which to me would be equally fun. So either way it's win-win.

SO!!!.....I am at a fitness seminar this weekend and I met a guy that trains at the local "fight club" and I 20 questioned him ....I might just bite the bullet drop in there. Sounds like some pretty wicked ass workouts that are just my style! NOt much for women there...but I guess I'll be meeting the few that do train there!...Well..... I am just talking still......might chicken...haha....
i was watching elitexc tonight with the family after my cousins birthday. (me and my uncle are mma nerds) and we saw this girl fight, and damn this girl that won was fine as hell (but the other looked a bit like frankenstein)

yeh carano is a beast and easy on the eyes too lol, yeh tapout i dont think kinbo took that lil guy too serious, he went from fighiting on the unaired undercard to beating one of the new big tymers lol gotta love it...but back to the topic im all for womens mma its definately the most exciting female sport out there IMO
ya know what, i was reading another article yesterday and they said that they wanted to look into the fight now. Somebody in this whole ordeal thinks that kimbo might have taken a hefty payday as well to hit the ground lights out. I have no idea what the hell is going on in Elitexc anymore. So many ideas floating around, but i guess we will find out soon, news has been buzzin about it

Female fighters are no joke. They are awesome. Carrano is the face of womens MMA right now, #1 because she is good looking, and #2 because she trains at Extreme Couture !! There are women fighters that could easily put a wooping on the average guy that watches and talks trash about fighters. You look to be very physically fit, and there is no other sport on the planet, that is more physically damanding. Most people that go to a true MMA gym to "train" because of the rise in popularity of the sport get a whole new respect for MMA. You have to have top notch cardio before you begin or you will fall by the wayside within days. I think it is right up your alley and you will fall in love with the sport and get a whole new perspective. Once you get over your stage fright, just go check it out. The sport needs as many women in the gym as possible. Even if you never fight (once you get the fever you will want to test yourself) you will push your body and your pain threshold like you never have before and become addicted. I say go for it !!!
See I was half assed thinking about doing some MMA training until you threw that nasty C word in there! Cardio!!! I hate that crap. I always say the only way I'm going to run is if someone is chasing me, even then I'd probably give up and say ok come and get me! I really hate cardio! Nevermind the MMA training, I'll just sit here and be a big (ha ha I'll be really big if I don't do some cardio) fan!!!!
i hate cardio. isnt the point of training to fight is so you dont have to run?

well I guess I won't be kicking any ass soon. I swear cardio sucks!

I must be nuts then....cause I love cardio...and hardcore endurance training!! I always get in crap for training in my anaerobic heart rate zone....(thats when you feel like barfing...eventually)and for training too long. I love drills and bootcamp style training! very true. One of the reasons Urijah is at the top of the game. He has the endurance to go hard for 5 rounds

What does not kill you only makes you stronger !! Cardio is life, it is the fuel in the tank, without it you might as well not even step up, unless you plan on doing ALOT of one punch knockouts within the first 15 seconds or so. LOL
If any plans to start training at a mma gym they should do advance cardio workouts for 3 to 6 months before walking into the gym just to be abke to keep up in class.

Hahaaa...I'm tellin ya, we live a parallel life...
Yah, I should have included a "snob or bitch"...:rolleyes:haha,
We are just too serious. Do you get the.."Smile?...why so serious?.." from strangers?
Well. I have worked on my people skills...and I even say hi and smile at strangers now...so...improving!!
Work in progress! :D
ha ha right on. I get the "smile" one too. So I am making an effort on that one. Or I just have a beer or 2 when I know I'll be in awkward situations or having to meet new people, that helps too. It scares the life outta me. So who knows how this new job is going to work out. But that is kinda why I wanted to do it. Face my fears before I'm too old and the only thing I'll be facing is my nurse changing my diaper at the old folks home. ha ha

Jessica and Lisa,
I think you two will agree with me on this.
I also get the, “I always thought you were a #*&%^, until I got to know you”. I am also very shy, which is why I love this board. No shyness needed. It is so much easier to communicate here than in person. Like, I could totally type stuff about Urijah, but if I were to meet him he would probably think I was mute. I really enjoy getting to know everyone one on here, and I also hope to overcome my shyness. (I always feel like I am either too shy or too goofy…maybe bipolar. Just kidding!)
ama6730
10-27-2008, 08:37 PM
I used to be really shy...that is until I became a mom. My son found so many new and creative ways to embarrass me in public that nothing really bothers me anymore. He is so outgoing and vocal...says exactly what he's thinking to whoever. He's taught me a lot in the 5 years he's been alive...like, there is never a rock available to crawl under when you need one!
I couldn't agree more bako. I think everyone I am friends with today tells me that they used to think I was a b-word, until they got to know me. I'm sure if I met Urijah I would be the same way as you. I was just telling one of my friends that the other day actually. I need to grow some cajones as we say here in Texas. But I am better since having kids but still really shy.
PS I luvd the 3 shy ladies club heading :) so true.

I know exactly how you guys feel! People thinking you are stuck up or a bitch when you're just quiet or reserved. Or people telling you to smile. Nice to know there are others who are the same. Unfortunately, I'm told I'm too intimidating also. Shy and intimidating, not a good combination for making friends.

My son was the exact opposite. He was just like me in every aspect. Never spoke, never wanted to be the center of attention. Then I put him in taekwondo 4 years ago and now he's a certified instructor and teaches class. It was the best thing I ever did for him. Now he'll never have the same struggles that I have regarding shyness.
I'm seriously too shy to take my kids trick or treating. I stand at the curb and let my husband walk the kids to the doors. That freaks me out too. My mom always tells me my kids are going to be so deprived because I am so shy. That is why as they get older I want to be able to put myself out there. I am working on it. Like I said, hopefully me getting out of this house a few days a week to work will help with my extreme shyness.
Kimberly
10-28-2008, 08:47 AM
I was like that too until I became a full time single parent (his dad lives nowhere near us). But seeing Cody behave just like me, showed me I had to make changes. I'm still a work in progress, but getting better everyday. My PT job at the taekwondo studio forces me to put myself out there. I have to talk to parents and new customers plus, I tested for the instructor trainee program which means I will eventually test to become a certified instructor. The first time I had to stand up in front of class and teach terrified me. But it's getting better. Just take it one day at a time.
That is awesome to put yourself out there like that. That takes alot of guts. That is great you made some changes for your son. I am trying too, I tell myself there is nothing to be scared of but it takes over and I opt to do nothing instead of put myself out there. I'll get better.
Kimberly
10-28-2008, 09:00 AM
You will get better, trust me. Remember, I'm 12 years older than you and I've had more years to work on it. So there's hope! :p I think this job you have now is going to do wonders for you. You took a huge step in putting yourself out there. That's a great start.
Yeah I hope so and that was a huge reason I went for it. I am scared to death but you gotta start somewhere. I'm sure the first time I will be scared but as the days go on it'll be cake! (at least that's what I'm telling myself)

Way to go ladies...sounds like we all have a few issues in common!
Lisa I can't believe that you are gonna be a bud girl ( I still say WOMAN!!! you rock) You will be facing a challenge, and I am sure that you will be awesome.
Same for you Kim, being an instructor will be so great.
( I am actually taking my group fitness instructor and personal trainer courses right now...for the same reason...I gotta get out of my shell and just do it!) My kids are exactly how you described....so shy...and self conscious...at such a young age...I need to be outgoing for them!! Although I do agree...that I changed alot for the better by being a mom...somehow that helped.
And ya Bako.....Urijah would think I was a mute too...haha.....that comment made me LOL....I probly wouldn't get the guts to even approach him.....sheesh.....I luv you ladies!!!
Somehow I feel more normal...!!!

LOL! And if you noticed, this whole conversation is in the Alpha Male Talk section of the forum. The guys will just have to deal with it. :p
I was laughing at the fact that this whole conversation was in Alpha Male Talk. ha ha ha that is funny. I was telling someone on here (I think it was you Jess) that if I ever had the pleasure of meeting Urijah I wouldn't be able to approach him either, way way too shy for that. That would require me to come all the way out of my shell, a definite no no.

I had one experience where I got to meet one of my most favorite musicians (Billy Sheehan bassist for Mr. Big/David Lee Roth/Talas). My sister had a backstage pass but only one of us could go. So, she made me go by myself. I was so nervous (I was only 15) I walked right past David Lee Roth (totally ignored him). When I finally got close enough to Billy I froze. He ended up having to come to me. As scared as I was to be back there by myself, I'm so glad I was able to meet him. So, if you ever get the chance to walk up to Urijah, take it! You'll regret it if you don't.

Sorry I'm a little late on this conversation, just joined the site.
I train at Urijah's gym and there are quit a few women that train there. Mostly conditioning and kickboxing (a few in BJJ). From what I can tell, the one's that spar with men and take BJJ classes are the ones that are the most serious about actually learning or taking MMA seriously. The rest fall somewhere into one of the stereotypes you mentioned, or just wanting to get in shape.
To answer your question, most of the guys I know couldn't care less. We are so used to seeing women in the gym, it's normal, at least where I am at.

Welcome to the site and thanks for your input. As you can see, we got a little off topic. I don't workout at an MMA gym, but we do teach BJJ at the TKD studio and the guys have no problems with the women who take BJJ. It's all the same as long as they are training and learning. The only thing I've encountered (in TKD) are guys not wanting to spar with me because they feel they can't hit women. They usually change their minds when they realize I don't have a problem hitting men. ;)

HaHaHaHa!!! Just kick their ass before they have a chance to change their mind!
LOL! I'll keep that in mind. Usually they are lower ranking so I just can't beat the snot out of them (although sometimes I'd like to). I usually have to give them the speech that when they go "easy" on me they aren't training to their potential and, therefore, neither am I. Once they get it they realize that mentality isn't going to work there. Everyone is there to train regardless of gender.
ama6730

I know what you mean. There were a few people at work I would have loved to kick the snot out of today.
Good luck with the training. And have fun doing it! Show them boys how it's done.

I watched that too!! I'm a huge Gina Carano fan!! Love her!!:D
Gina is one bad assed bitch! And I say that with all due respect, nothing bad meant there at all! She is awesome! She is my husband's and my favorite female MMA fighter, she is like the female version of Urijah!
Jessica, if becoming a fighter is something that you want to do, then you should and you shouldn't let what anyone else says or thinks stop you! Do your thing or some day you may just look back and regret that you didn't give it a try when you was able to. Life is short, enjoy it and have no regrets! Those who try to keep you back from your dreams or your ambitions don't support you enough in the first place so don't give rat's azz what they want! Live for yourself or nobody else will! And best of luck to you in becoming whatever you want in life!!!

I don't know where you are form, but if it is anywhere near Sacramento then you should check out Urijah's gym - Ultimate Fitness. Not an intimidating environment AT ALL. There are a lot of women who train there - it ranges from women who are there just for a workout - to the ones who are truly trying to get into fighting.
I would love to go to his gym, not to see him and all that, but I bet is one of the best gyms out there to truly learn about MMA! dreamin.........

Gina will hopefully take it...why do I always support the prettier fighters? ..Gina, Urijah, GSP. :D

Because they are not just "pretty" they are talented. I'm sure if they weren't talented looks wouldn't even matter.
Gina is awesome! She's my favorite..

I really hope Gina wins too, but a little worried about that happening... I really think Gina will have problems with her. Santos is very aggressive and pushes forward (which Gina isn't always the best with) and I really think Santos is better on the ground. I guess we just have to hope it doesn't go to the ground.
One interesting thing about Santos - I went to her EliteXC fight in Stockton -
Santos was destroying her opponent - hit her with a good combination and dropped her to the ground - Santos thought she knocked the girl out - even though the ref didn't step in - Santos then turns around jumps on the fence and starts yelling into the crowd (thinking she won). That whole time, her opponent was getting up and coming up behind her - just before her opponent got to her, Santos realized what is going on and jumped down and then ended the fight

I think it s a very cool thing to want to do. I mean look at Gina Carano, she s one of the top female fighters in the world and she is the exact opposite of butch. In fact I think she s amazingly sexy... not just the way she looks, but what she can DO. I think a lot of guys find a women that can not only fight, but defend herself when needed very attractive. Unless of course the guy is very insecure and not confident. But I don't think your interested in those kind of guys anyway. ;) So i'd say go for it and have fun!

I train and fight in mma. i also train with some female mixed martial artist that fight also. There are a bunch of girls out there that are really good! I think they should get more female fights on tv and in the ufc and wec.

I love Gina C. I think she is a badass fighter. I love to watch chic fights actually, go for it Jessica!!
Yeah I'm all about anyone doing whatever it is to showcase their talent. Chicks that fight rock! But for me personally, I can't watch the chick fights. To me they seem more brutal or something. Not sure what it is really, but something about it makes my stomach uneasy.

Im completely for women fighting in mma. I remember in elite xc there was this bad ass chick fighter named cyborg. she was seriously the most intimidating woman i have ever seen. shes from brazil and i think she trains in the same camp as wanderlei and anderson. She completely dominated in her fights in elite xc, she was very entertaining, foot stomps and all. i would love to see her fight again!

Well....I went to a kickboxing session last night....I really enjoyed it and plan to continue. Very cool atmosphere, very professional "krew"? "cru"....coach. And...I really enjoyed throwing all those kicks and punches and knees and learning all about the proper form and technique......definitely going to continue.
:D
