I got back in the groove yesterday. I started training like I always do with a light 3 mile run. Afterwards I stretched out and did my shadow boxing. Then came a decent bag work. I wanted to work with Master Thonglor but he was busy so that didn't happen. All in all it was a nice way to re-acquaint myself with training.

TODAY was not the best day for me! I arrived about 3pm and changed. Jumped on the treadmill and ran for an hour. (5.5 miles) I stretched out and did some shadow and watched patiently as Master Thong work with another pupil. After 6 3x min rounds I finally got a chance to work with the man. We spar lightly for two rounds cos he was not wearing shinguards. I began to take it up a notch in power and he returned the favor by gaving me a few hard shots. Towards the end of the 5th round is where I got BLASTED!!!!! Like I said earlier, he was not wearing shinguards and BLAM! I eat a very hard highkick to the head. I did not get KOed but I do have a splitting head ache and I'm sure it will be around tomorrow. On top of that, we went another round and my right calf started cramping like mad so that ended my training session for the day. Today sucked.

I'll post more about my training as the days pass. Thanks for reading.

That's awesome Tobias. I'm in the same boat as far as not having the best of days at UF as well...Urijah instructed me for submission grappling this morning and needless today say I got my a** handed to me. It was awesome in the sense that I got to learn from the best but in the same sense I find myself asking, "how will I ever be even half as good as Urijah?" All I can do is just train, eat, sleep, wake up and re-peat. I guess I'll eventually get there (after 20 years lol).

Getting your ass handed to you by Faber isn't as bad as getting kicked it the head my Master Thong. My head is pain at the moment.:(

Hahaha that's brutal! I feel for ya! Does Master Thong only train with professionals or does he do regular classes as well?

He teaches a class on mon and wed in the early afternoon and I'm sure that everyone who was in the class yesterday was not a pro fighter.

Nice I'll have to check out his classes. What an honor it would be to get my head kicked off by Master Thong.

It's great to talk about but that experience is not one I'm looking forward to again. My right eye is starting to swell a bit now too. Time to get the ice.

That is the only way for me to do it. I don't take any of the classes cos they do not benefit me. I only train with Master Thong. Getting clocked teaches you to keep your hands up or get out of the way.

Glad to hear that Tobias. Look forward to more of your post on your training. It gives me ideas for things I can work on. Very inspiring.

Went in today and ran another 5 miles. I was stretching out and got a call from the mom to come pick my son cos he was losing. DAMN. So I had to cut my workout short. I'll be there tomorrow though.

what was he losing?

what was he losing?

Sorry about that. He was losing "IT". Crying for no reason at all. My son is a daddy's boy. He wants to do everything I do. I'll start bringing him to the gym soon.

ohhhhhh that is so cute!!!!! there is nothing like quality mma time. Is he into the sport as well?

tobias
12-31-2008, 12:12 PM
He is and isn't. If he hears spongebob or a cartoon that he recognizes he leaves the room and goes and checks that out. He watches a lot of muay thai cos he can't escape that when he is with my mom and dad-n-law. That is the direction I will steer him in unless he chooses otherwise.

i was there when tobias had his session with Thong, I was wondering what was going on. I saw tobias being hugged by MT for a while then he was sitting in the corner getting water brought to him. I thought it was just vip treatment. Tobias told me later what had happened. Welcome back homie.
haha. :D

See there, you do need a nurse there to kiss boo boos!

tobias
01-01-2009, 04:09 PM
A nurse in the gym would be great. Kind of like back in grade school when you went to see the school nurse but I think us guys would appreciate it more now. :)

01-01-2009, 04:12 PM
Tell Urijah to give me a job and I'll be there asap with my posse ;)

tobias
01-01-2009, 04:27 PM
I doubt you'd make the same money you are making now if Faber hired you. :( I know there are plenty of available positions for RN's in the area though.

ama6730
01-01-2009, 04:47 PM
yeah, no doubt he wouldn't pay me what I'm used to making. After all, the only thing I'd be doing is running around the gym behind Master Thong with ice packs and band-aids treating his victims. That would be a lot more fun than a real nursing job.

Lisa
01-01-2009, 07:24 PM
great eye candy too!!! Better that looking at the old folks!!! Can I be a part of your posse Ama?

ama6730
01-01-2009, 08:10 PM
sure you can Lisa! Now we just have to talk Urijah into hiring a nurse. I'll start working on a resume haha

Lisa
01-02-2009, 08:59 PM
I work on mine too! ;)

If this is the case then I will let Joseph kick me in the leg (I gotta keep the face decent) but only if I get a hug afterwards!:)

I got to UF a bit late today. I was under the impression that the doors were open till 2pm and I was wrong. I had just about an hour to do what I could so I ran a few miles at a high pace and did some bag work to work up a really good sweat. The gym was virtually empty. I'm more that sure that it will be packed come monday and I'll be there. Time to go enjoy my egg-whites, oatmeal, and orange juice.

Britt
01-03-2009, 08:59 PM
so what kind of diet are you on T?

tobias
01-03-2009, 11:47 PM
I'm on the Thai/Lao special. No fast food. No soda. I have very little carbs after 9pm. No red meat, only chicken and fish. I've gotta whip myself back into shape cos I was letting myself for a bit. No longer.

tobias
01-05-2009, 10:32 PM
1/5/2009. I ran for a hour again today. Making 5 miles is getting kinda easy. The hard part is getting through Master Thong's class. Today's was relatively easy. We worked on the proper kicking technique, footwork, did some work on the pads, and also did about 250 knees on the bags. I trained with Brandy. I don't think she is a member of the site but she had some good technique when throwing elbows. I was impressed. So is also a southpaw like me so that made holding the pads for sooooo much better than holding for right-handers. I am right-handed myself but have always done everything left handed including baseball. We'll see what tomorrow brings.

My body was killing me today so I didn't make it in. I'll be there tomorrow though with a smile. Gonna run another 5 miles too. That's how we did it in Thailand and that is how I do it here. I like to keep things in context.:)

I know have not posted about my training in a few day. My bad people. I'm still doing my 5 miles runs before training. Making them is actually getting a lot easier now. My calves are not burning and I'm not breathing hard at all afterwards; even when I run the the last 5 min at 8mph. I made my run today and jumped into MT's class. I had about 5-6 minutes to stretch out, wrap my hands, and grab my gloves and shinguards. We started with doing some light sparring and it was fun. I had forgotten what it was like to get tagged a bit and it felt good. The first few rounds were just kicks then we were allowed to mix it up with punches and kicks but no knees and or elbows.(my favourite weapons) I sparred with 3 different guys before MT told Tito to come spar with me. Nice way to make someones acquaintance. We only got to spar one round but it was fun. Tito has some really good hands and great movement! I've watched him hit the bag from a distance so I knew what to expect. Even though you know what to expect I'm sure he could have poured it on more and I would have returned the favour. I liked sparring with Tito cos he challenged me. He was not just going to stand their and let me tee off on him. I'm looking forward to my next encounter with him. I did 7 rounds of sparring with just the one minute breaks that MT gave us. They were not hard rounds so I did not use much energy. When we started with pad work, that is when I began to put full effort into my kicks. There is something about middle kicks(kicks to the body) that I love. Some folks like head kicks but I prefer the body. They hurt more! And getting Koed from a body kick is embarrassing. Me being a southpaw, I always aim for the liver. That will drop you fast but it is more of a delayed reaction. Get hit there solid and you will not make the ref's count. We trained for about an hour and 40 minutes approximately. My body was exhausted about 10minutes before class ended. I still made the 50 sit-ups and 40 push-ups but I was spent. One guy asked if I was tired and I said yes. He says, "I'm not." Then I had to enlighten him on my 5 mile run that I make right before training and the only rest time I had was 5 or 6 minutes to stretch. He had a look of disbelief on his face.:) I'm getting ready for Thailand 5 months in advance.

Thanks for reading. And no there were not any paragraphs cos this was not an essay. MLA format has gone out the window! :D

Tobias, I love reading about your training. It is so inspiring. After being out of TKD for about a year with two knee surgeries, my sparring really suffered and I've had problems getting my confidence back. But reading about your training really gets me going. Hope that doesn't sound weird or stalkerish. I have problems kicking to the head because of my hip, so I work really hard on my kicks to the body. Thanks for posting how powerful those can be. I always felt like I was lacking because I can't kick to the head (of people taller than me). I look forward to your next post!

tobias

I'm glad you enjoy reading about my training EJ. It lets me know some is paying attention to my progress. I appreciate your comments and everyone else's. Kicks to the head are great but when some is fresh, 9/10 times you are not going to land a head kick unless they are not paying attention. They are going to block or get out of the way. It's a bitter harder to move you entire body as opposed to your head. Look at boxer again for instance, if they have their opponent pinned against the ropes, they just don't go crazy and swing for the head all day, the body is stationary and can not move as fast as the head so shots to the body are always available.

Kimberly
01-15-2009, 04:39 PM
Totally agree with you Tobias. It's much easier to block a kick to the head than to the body. Plus, we don't wear chest pads so it hurts a lot more too. At least I have head gear, which takes most of the impact of the kick (for the most part).

Although I enjoy reading your updates on your kick ass training, it exhausts me just to read them :) You're the man Tob! Keep up the great work!

I'll try. I lost my voice and Thursday then got this cough on Saturday and it hurts when cough. I have not been to the gym since Wednesday but I'll be there today to try to sweat this mild sickness. Where is Ama to give me some advice when you need her. I have not had a cold or any kind of sickness since I was 13 so this is very new to me.

Today's training was great! It consisted of taking MT out for Thai food. I don't know if it gets any better. :D We even met this Thai chick who's husband trains with the local muay thai fraud instructor in town. And yes this fraud is the former trainer of Faber. I told her to tell her husband to come down to UF since he is into muay thai if he really wants good training. I know he is serious cos she said he had been to Thailand to train so we will see if the guy sees the light or if he is blind and likes bullshit.

Kimberly

That sounds like a great training session Tobias! LOL! By the way, what would you recommend someone try at a Thai restaurant?

There too many great Thai dishes to name. Almost Everything with Shrimp is good and I also like the the more ethnic food like papaya salad(Lao style) The Thai version is not that great:(

Kimberly

I usually order red curry but I'll keep an eye out for the papaya salad. I'm always up for trying something new.

Hopefully you're feeling better so you can get back to working out.
